Hardwood floors look great in your house but you do have to make sure that you take care of them properly. This is not all that hard to do but there are some things that you have to be aware of when it comes to cleaning them. The main thing that you have to be careful of is that you don't allow them to become scratched or discolored. If this happens they will likely need to be replaced which can be quite expensive.

The reason that you want to do this is that the dirt and dust can really damage your floor by leaving scratches on it. The easiest way to get rid of the dirt is to use a vacuum with the soft brush attachment. However you can also use a broom if you want to just make sure that you use a soft one.

The next thing that you are going to want to do is to take a mop to the floor. In most cases you will only need to use warm water in order to get it clean. The key here is to make sure that you really ring the mop out so that you are not putting a big puddle of water on the floor. You also want to make sure that the water doesn't dry onto the floor so you are going to want to divide the floor into small sections.

As soon as you finish mopping you are going to want to make sure that you go over it with a dry cloth so that you can get all of the water off of the floor. If you allow it to dry you are going to end up with streaks on your hardwood floors. Since this is something that you obviously don't want this is an important step because once you have the streaks getting rid of them is not easy to do, avoiding them is much simpler.

In some cases you may find that a damp mop is not sufficient to get the job done, in this case you are going to want to mix in some vinegar with your water. The other option that you have is to use a product that is specially made for the purpose. There are several of these available on the market, in general they are not necessary but you may want to use one. Some people will also choose to add a polish after they are finished cleaning however these days it is not really necessary to do this since the floors already have a pretty durable polish on them.
